“Hi, it’s been a while since I posted here mostly because I’ve been very busy packing. We’ve actually finally found a place to move to that is much more reasonably priced and in San Anselmo, a place that we both really love.

Today is Beth Leigh’s birthday so those of you that know her, give her a ring and tell her happy birthday. I can’t express how grateful I am to her and her family for being so supportive of me. They’re just wonderful and she’s just perfect.

What’s going on with me? Last week, my second cycle of chemo was much easier to take. I didn’t have Compazine so I didn’t get the whole “crawling out of my skin” feeling. After that it was tough for almost a week. I was pretty much laid out, I was pretty tired and I was going through a lot mood swings. It’s a lot, I think, for the body to have to try to process such intense chemicals and it certainly took its toll on me. I actually had chemotherapy, Zometa which is bone strengthener and also fights the cancer, and the flu shot all in that same day and I think that was a little overwhelming for my body.

But this week, I am feeling a lot better. I have my energy back and my mood is much brighter and I am really happy about that.

The one thing that I think helps me get through all of this is just staying present with every moment. Letting go of the past, letting go of my expectations of the future and enjoying what’s happening right here. Some people say that’s my dharma. It’s certainly has been a gift for me to stay focused on the present. In fact, that is all there is.

That’s actually how I coped in the past with pain - intense bone pain. Just reminding myself every moment that the pain is temporary and taking a breath and remembering what’s going on right in the present makes it easier to just enjoy life and not be too focused on anything else, whether it’s throbbing pain or something affecting me emotionally.

At the same time, trying to shed things - emotional things - that may be sort of baggage for me. This is the fall and from the Chinese medical standpoint, like spring cleaning, you also have fall cleaning, so this is the time to release any emotional baggage that you might be harboring with yourself or others. I guess that’s an invitation for you to clean up any emotional stuff you have with me or anybody else in your life.

That’s it. I will be posting again soon, probably after we move.
Bye-bye.”

Happy Birthday Beth, and thanks for all your insight Jer.

I am with you on the Fall Cleaning (now that the Summer cleaning is wrapped up-- haha).

I know I really appreciate your giving us these updates, and I hope its easier for you to only have to tell your story once per week or so, rather than have to keep repeating the details endlessly.

Have a great weekend!

-J.

Happy Birthday to Beth!

I also really appreciate these messages, Jer. I always feel like the autumn is a good time to revitalize and clean and change. Staying focused on the current moment and the ephemerality of it all sounds like a really good and wise thing.

Love,
Shana
